In his closing speech on Friday, Mr Winter mentioned: ‘You may suppose on the coronary heart of this case lies a reasonably historic foolishness of husbands.

‘If Mr Elphicke was on trial right here for behaving foolishly you may discover it simple to convict.

Mr Winter described each complainants within the trial as ‘unreliable’ and questioned whether or not the jurors may depend on their proof.

He mentioned of the second complainant’s allegation: ‘As soon as she set that hare working, it has to maintain working. If it doesn’t maintain working, it will likely be caught by the pack of canine.’

In her closing speech on Thursday, prosecutor Eloise Marshall QC described Elphicke as ‘an completed liar’.
